The South West Advocacy Network (SWAN) provides free and independent advocacy services; enabling people to have their views and wishes heard and ensuring they can access the support and services they are entitled to.
We are looking for volunteers with a willingness to help others have their voices heard by becoming Volunteer Advocates.
The role of a Volunteer Advocate is varied, but we are currently seeking volunteers to work within our Independent Mental Health Advocacy Team.

*Volunteer Advocate within the Independent Mental Health Advocacy Team*

To support clients who, because of ill mental health, require an advocate to access the support they need. This will ensure that clients have greater choice and control over their lives, both now and in the future.

You will work with clients in hospital settings who are there voluntarily to ensure their voices are heard and rights upheld. You will provide coaching to clients so that they can self-advocate.

*Volunteer Advocacy roles are supported with full training and guidance from our qualified Advocates. This is a rewarding opportunity where you can empower a person to have a voice where they otherwise would not.*

The role will require you to work with clients who have experienced or who may have mental ill health, a learning disability, or a physical disability. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work with individuals from all walks of life and we welcome applications from volunteers with their own direct lived experience.

*We are looking for individuals who have the following skills and attributes to volunteer in this role with us:*

* Positive attitude towards vulnerable clients who may have a variety of complex needs.
* Knowledge and understanding of the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Mental Health Act 1983 is desirable but training will be provided.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Experience of record keeping and report writing.
* Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding.
* IT literate.
